Are you ready for the celebrations? But what is the meaning of celebration without some good food? And good food can only be prepared with good ingredients. So make sure to choose the best. But one ingredient we can be worry-free about is Ovo Farm Fresh eggs. 

  1. Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies

We love recipes with ingredients that are likely already in our cupboards and refrigerators! Sugar cookies are a fast and straightforward cookie to whomp up, and really fun to embellish with the entire family.

 

Prep Time: 15 min

Cook Time: 10 min

 

Ingredients

Cookies

  • 1 cup (250 mL) white sugar
  • 1 cup (250 mL) butter
  • 1 tsp (5 mL) vanilla
  • 2 Ovo Farm eggs, well beaten
  • 2 1/2 cups (625 mL) all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp (10 mL) baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp (2.5 mL) salt

Glaze Icing

  • 1 1/2 cups (375 mL) icing sugar
  • 3 tbsp (45 mL) milk
  • 1/8 tsp (0.5 mL) almond extract
  • 3 drops food colouring (optional)

Instructions

Cookies

  • With electric mixture, beat sugar, butter and vanilla until mixture is creamy, about 2 minutes. Scrape down sides of bowl. Add eggs after each egg; beat thoroughly.
  • In a separate bowl combine flour, baking powder and salt. Beat the dry ingredients into the creamed mixture.
  • Roll out cookie dough to 1/4″ (0.6 cm) onto a lightly floured board. For best results, don’t roll cookie dough too thin. Use cookie cutters of your choice for a spread of various shapes and sizes. Place cookies on parchment-lined cookie sheets.
  • Bake at 350°F (180°C) for 10 minutes or until the underside of cookies turn golden brown.

Glaze Icing

Combine icing sugar with milk to reach the desired spreading consistency. Stir in food colouring or leave icing white. Using a pastry brush, paint frosting over cooled cookies and decorate with coloured sugar, toasted coconut or slivered almonds, chocolate shavings or chocolate chips.

  1. Holiday Cinnamon Buns

Who can resist the heavenly smell of baking buns? These holiday buns are a pleasure that you’re going to want to enjoy morning, noon and night. It’s very likely that this sweet, fluffy and sticky treat will find itself at the highest of everyone’s list.

 

Prep Time: 3 hours 5 min

Cook Time: 20 min

 

Ingredients

 

Dough

  • 1 cup (250 mL) warm milk
  • 2 1/4 tsp (11.5 mL) yeast 
  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) sugar
  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) melted butter
  • 2 tsp (10 mL) salt
  • 2 Ovo Farm eggs
  • 4 1/2 cups (1.125 L) all-purpose flour + a little for handling

Filling

  • 1 cup (250 mL) packed brown sugar
  • 2 1/2 tbsp (40 mL) cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) butter

Frosting

  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cup (375 mL) sugar
  • 1/4 cup (60 mL) cream cheese
  • 1/2 tbsp (10 mL) vanilla
  • 1/8 tsp (0.5 mL) salt

 

Instructions

Dough

  • Add yeast and sugar to warm milk in a large bowl. Stir gently to mix and permit the yeast to foam to proof. Once the yeast has proofed, stir in melted butter, salt, eggs, and flour into yeast mixture. Gently mix until well-combined.
  • Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 10-12 minutes. Form the dough into an outsized ball and place it into an outsized buttered glass bowl. Cover lightly with plastic or with a dish towel and place during a warm location freed from any drafts. Allow the dough to rise so that it is doubled in size.

Filling

  • Place dough on a large lightly floured surface and roll to a 1/4 inch thickness. Spread softened butter over the highest of the dough.
  • Stir together the brown sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle generously all over the buttered dough.
  • Tightly roll the dough, beginning at the long edge, until a log of dough has been formed.
  • Cut the dough into 3/4-inch to 1-inch slices and place onto a lightly buttered sheet pan.

Baking and Icing

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (205°C).
  • Allow rolls to rise for 30 minutes on a sheet pan.
  • Place rolls into oven and allow to cook until lightly browned and cooked through, but not overcooked, about 15-20 minutes.
  • While cinnamon rolls are baking, prepare cream cheese frosting by creaming together butter, confectioner’s sugar, cream cheese, vanilla and salt.
  • Remove cinnamon rolls from the oven and allow to cool slightly.
  • Spread frosting generously over rolls while they are warm.

3. Scotch Eggs

Scotch eggs are a wonderfully satisfying meal and are always successful at dinner parties. They truly bring the vacations to subsequent level.

Prep Time: 30 min

Cook Time: 10 min

Ingredients

Scotch Eggs

  • 8 Ovo Farm eggs
  • 1/3 lb (0.2 kg) white button mushrooms
  • 1 1/2 cups (375 mL) canned chickpeas, rinsed and drained
  • 1 1/4 cups (315 mL) bread crumbs
  • 1 tbsp (15 mL) curry powder
  • 1 tsp (5 mL) salt
  • Oil for deep frying

Curry Mayo 

  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) mayonnaise
  • 1/2 tbsp (10 mL) white wine vinegar
  • 1/2 tbsp (10 mL) lime juice
  • 1/2 tsp (2.5 mL) curry powder
  • 1/4 tsp (1.25 mL) salt

 

Instructions

 

Scotch Eggs

  • Boil 6 eggs in their shell for 5 1/2 minutes. Run cold water over eggs until cooled and gently remove the shell. Put aside.
  • In a food processor, roughly grind the mushrooms. Add the chickpeas and grind finely. Add breadcrumbs, curry powder, salt and the remaining 2 eggs. Mix until well combined.
  • Divide the chickpea mixture into 6 equal portions. Dampen hands and knead a portion of the mixture until it is 1/2 inch thick. Place an egg within the middle and canopy with the mixture. Gently hand-roll and seal the cracks by pinching. If the mixture becomes sticky, dampen hands again. Repeat with the remaining eggs and mixture. Set aside while preparing mayonnaise and salad.
  • In a deep saucepan or casserole, heat oil to 350°F (180°C) and fry eggs for 5 minutes until golden brown. Serve each prod a nest of the salad with a dollop of curry mayonnaise.

Curry Mayonnaise

 

  • In a small bowl, mix all the ingredients. Cover. Can be stored for up to 2 days within the refrigerator.
  1. Caramel Holiday Pancakes

Perfect for a homey holiday brunch

Prep Time: 2 hours

Cook Time: 25 min

Ingredients

Pancakes

  • 2 cups (500 mL) homemade eggnog
  • 2 cups (500 mL) whole milk
  • 5 tbsp (75 mL) melted butter
  • 1 tsp (5 mL) vanilla extract
  • 3 cups (750 mL) all-purpose flour
  • 6 Ovo Farm egg yolks
  • 1/4 cup (60 mL) white sugar
  • 1 tbsp (15 mL) baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp (7.5 mL) baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp (2.5 mL) salt
  • 1/2 tsp (2.5 mL) cinnamon
  • 12 chocolate hazelnut holiday candies for topping (optional)

Instructions

Caramel sauce

  • Add the sugar to a heavy bottom or non-stick pan and whisk until melted. Once melted, add butter, whisking until it’s fully melted.
  • Remove the melted butter and sugar mixture from the heat immediately and slowly add the cream whisking until absorbed. If there are any sugar clumps, run the caramel sauce through a sieve or strainer and discard clumps.
  • Let cool to room temperature.

Pancakes

  • In a large bowl, combine all the wet ingredients and whisk until smooth. In another large bowl, combine dry ingredients whisking until fully combined.
  • Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients whisking as you pour. Once you’ve got your batter, preheat a flat top pancake griddle or non-stick pan, and canopy with cooking spray or melted butter.
  • Use a 4 oz (120 mL) ladle to scoop 4-5 pancakes onto a flat top pancake griddle or do it in smaller batches if you are using the non-stick pan. Allow the pancakes to cook fully on one side before flipping. You should start to ascertain bubbles start to pop through the batter indicating that heat is penetrating through to the center of the pancake. Flip and finish on the reverse side.
  • Stack the pancakes and top with the crumbled chocolate. Use a spoon to drizzle warm homemade caramel sauce everywhere on all sides of the pancake, then top with the ultimate full chocolate. Serve while warm.
  1. Yorkshire Puddings

Ingredients

  • 4 Ovo Farm eggs
  • 1 cup (250 mL) whole milk
  • 1 cup (250 mL) all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp (5 mL) salt
  • 1/4 cup (60 mL) vegetable oil 

 

 

 

Instructions

  • Set a rack in upper third of oven and preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, flour and salt until smooth. Set aside.
  • Place 1 tsp (5 mL) oil or beef drippings into each cup of a 12-cup muffin pan. Transfer pan to oven and warmth until oil is smoking about 2 minutes.
  • Remove pan from oven and quickly pour batter into cups, filling 2/3 full. Bake until puddings have risen and are golden brown, about quarter-hour. Serve immediately.

6. Gingerbread Cookies

Gingerbread cookies bring a fun family baking day. Use any shape kitchen utensil you would like and decorate to your heart’s desire.

Cook Time: 12 min

Ingredients

Cookies

  • 4 cups (1 L) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp (15 mL) ground ginger
  • 2 tsp (10 mL) cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp (1.25 mL) cloves
  • 1/4 tsp (1.25 mL) nutmeg
  • 1 1/2 tsp (7.5 mL) baking powder
  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) shortening
  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) butter
  • 1 3/4 cup (440 mL) brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup (75 mL) molasses
  • 2 Ovo Farm eggs

Butter Icing

  • 1 1/2 cups (375 mL) icing sugar
  • 3 tbsp (45 mL) butter, softened
  • 1 tbsp (15 mL) vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp (15 mL) milk
  • 3 drops food colouring (optional)

Cookies

Gingerbread Cookies

In a medium sized bowl, place flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and leaven and mix with a fork. In a large bowl, place the shortening, butter and brown sugar and cream together with an electric mixer; add molasses and beat until blended. Break the eggs into the sugar mixture and beat until eggs are completely blended in. Add half the flour mixture with the butter mixture and stir to combine. Add the remainder of the flour mixture and continue blending. The mixture will be thick. Lightly flour a clean kitchen surface and roll out the dough to 1/4-inch (0.6 cm) thickness. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper. Using a kitchen utensil, cut out gingerbread men and gingerbread ladies, and place them on parchment paper. Bake at 350°F (180°C) for 12 – 13 minutes.

Icing

Combine powdered sugar, butter, vanilla and milk, beating until creamy. Thin with a couple of more drops of milk to succeed in desired spreading consistency. Stir in optional coloring or leave icing white. Spread frosting over cooled cookies.

Decorate with your choice of candies and sprinkles.

7. Eggnog for Kids

Treat your little ones to some delicious eggnog this season. Use the leftovers to form Eggnog French toast subsequent day!

Prep Time: 2 min

Cook Time: 12 min

Ingredients

  • 6 Ovo Farm eggs
  • 1/3 cup (75 mL) liquid honey or sugar
  • 1/8 tsp (0.5 mL) salt
  • 4 cups (1 L) milk (1%), divided
  • 1 tbsp (15 mL) vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Whisk eggs, honey and salt in large saucepan. Gradually add 2 cups (500 mL) of milk. Cook and stir over medium-low heat until mixture coats back of a spoon, 12 to fifteen minutes. (Do not let the mixture boil.)
  • Pour into a large heatproof bowl; stir in remaining milk and vanilla. Place bowl in drinking water, stirring frequently, until mixture is cool, about quarter-hour. Cover and refrigerate for at least 3 hours.
  • When ready to serve, whisk in flavouring, if desired.
  1. Challah (Egg Bread)

Challah is traditionally used during the Jewish Sabbath and festivals. It is an egg enriched and slightly sweet dough.

Prep Time: 30 min

Cook Time: 45 min

Ingredients

  • 2 tsp (10 mL) sugar
  • 1/4 cup (60 mL) warm water
  • pkg (8 g) or 2 1/4 tsp (11 mL) dry active yeast
  • 3/4 cup (175 mL) warm water (100°-105°F)
  • eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1/4 cup (60 mL) vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup (60 mL) honey
  • 1 tsp (5 mL) salt
  • 4 cups (1 L) all-purpose flour

 

Topping

  • 1 Ovo farm egg
  • 1/4 cup (60 mL) icing sugar
  • 1/4 cup (60 mL) all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp (30 mL) butter, softened

 

Instructions

Step 1

  • In small bowl stir sugar with warm water. Sprinkle yeast over top and let stand until foamy for about 10 minutes.
  • In a large bowl, stir together yeast mixture, warm water, eggs, vegetable oil, honey and salt.
  • Stir in flour, one cup at a time, to make soft dough.

 

Step 2

  • Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead dough until no longer sticky, about 10 minutes. Place in a greased bowl. Set in a warm place; cover and let rise until doubled in volume, about 1 1/2 hours.
  • Punch down dough. Divide dough into two-thirds and one-third.

 

Step 3

  • Using the larger piece, divide the dough into three. Form each bit into rope, 14 inches (35 cm) long. Pinch pieces at one end and braid ropes.
  • Repeat with smaller dough. Place larger braid on a parchment paper lined baking sheet.
  • Whisk egg with 1 tsp (5 mL) water. Brush over the bottom braid. Center smaller braid over top and press lightly to stick. Cover with greased wrapping and let rise in warm draft-free place until doubled, about 1 hour.
  • Streusel topping: In bowl, using pastry cutter or fork, combine icing sugar, flour and butter until crumbly. Brush remaining egg wash over challah, sprinkle with streusel.

 

Step 4

Bake in 350°F (180°F) oven for 40 to 45 minutes. If the challah is browning too quickly, tent with foil for the last 20 minutes of baking time. Let cool on the rack.
